Open-Source Software for Genome Analysis, Optimized for Speed and Scalability

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is releasing version 4.0 of the Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK), the institute's flagship genome variant discovery package for analysis of high-throughput sequencing data. GATK4 is fully open-source at no cost for academic and commercial research on local computing infrastructure, and is also designed for deployment on cloud environments. The reengineered GATK solves key bottlenecks, including a step where GATK4 can analyze types of genomic sequence data 15 times faster than GATK3, while increasing input capacity by a factor of five.

GATK4 is the first and only open-source software package that covers all major variant classes (SNPs, indels, copy number, and structural variation) for both germline and cancer, and for genomes and targeted sequencing assays. Researchers can access GATK4's pipelines through FireCloud, the institute's cloud-based analysis portal, free of charge. These pipelines are fully configured and are ready-to-run on preloaded example datasets. For more information, please visit

Modular, Automated qPCR TubeSealer

HSE•AG introduces the TubeSealer, a module that automatically, safely, and reliably seals qPCR tubes and plates. The device can easily integrate into almost any qPCR workflow, maximizing sealing reliability, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination, and providing flexible sealing of individual tubes and whole plates.

The TubeSealer uses a spherical bead to close a PCR tube. The beads are carefully applied from the bead container and forced into the opening of the tube by the controlled movement of a plunger. An integrated optical sensor then performs a load check of all closed tubes. Additional beads can be loaded onto the system by clipping in a new bead container.

The TubeSealer also functions as a stand-alone unit in a manual workflow. The integrated version is adaptable to any type of data interface, including CAN, USB, or even wireless connections. The communication protocol is SiLA compliant and can be seamlessly integrated into complex workflows. For more information, please visit
