New Single Cell Dispensing System for Cell Line Development
Solentim, the developer of instrumentation for cell line development, announces the addition of a major new product line called the VIPS™ (Validated In-situ Plate Seeding). The VIPS has been developed for automatically seeding single cells into 96 and 384-well microplates as part of the process to generate clonally-derived cell lines. The new system offers customers the ability to improve their subsequent clone screening process by starting with potentially fewer numbers of plates.
The VIPS builds upon the wide adoption, regulatory acceptance, and established benefits of a limiting dilutions approach, while significantly and dramatically increasing plate seeding efficiency. This is achieved by a patented process called SMART LD™, whereby imaging of the well is carried out immediately after a cell dispensing event with a video feedback loop confirming whether a single cell was dispensed or not. This is an iterative process repeated several times over to ensure a final plate with a resultant high occupancy of single cells in wells, most of which will grow out to form colonies.
VIPS™ (Validated In-situ Plate Seeding)
The VIPS is available immediately for sale to customers in the US and Europe, with worldwide availability to follow. For more information, please visit
£15M Gene Therapy Manufacturing Operations Expansion
Cobra Biologics, an international contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) of biologics and pharmaceuticals, announces expansion of operations at its sites in the UK and Sweden to meet increased demand. Over the next two years, Cobra will invest up to £15M on a phased expansion plan, supporting the company’s R&D expertise in developing rapid and cost effective viral vector and DNA plasmid production platforms. The initial phase will begin in the UK and will extend the company’s viral vector Phase III and commercial manufacturing capabilities. The second phase, in Sweden, will double capacity for High Quality (HQ) DNA plasmid production and characterisation, essential for supporting early clinical phase adeno-associated virus (AAV) and lentivirus manufacture.

The third phase of investment will see the addition of larger clinical and commercial capabilities for GMP DNA production. In total, it is anticipated these investments will create up to 50 new jobs and will also benefit the wider supply chain companies which provide Cobra with services and facilities.
