Novel Western Blot Detection System
Molecular Devices has launched the ScanLater™ Western Blot Detection System. The first-of-its-kind system combines western blot membrane detection with a multimode microplate reader platform. A separate, dedicated western blot system is not needed, saving both lab space and budget. ScanLater is compatible with Molecular Devices’ SpectraMax® i3 and SpectraMax Paradigm® platforms. The ScanLater system is a time-resolved fluorescence (TRF)-based western blot detection assay, an optimal detection method that reduces stray excitation light. Users will discover lower background noise and higher sensitivity. The ScanLater system includes the detection cartridge, western blot kit, and image acquisition software powered by SoftMax Pro®.
The ScanLater western blot kit contain europium-labeled secondary antibodies designed to work with existing primary antibodies without further optimization. This substrate-free method of western blot detection not only outperforms traditional chemiluminescence and fluorescence-based western blot detection, it also allows membrane detection at any time. ScanLater’s detection cartridge can be added to the SpectraMax i3 and SpectraMax Paradigm platforms, adding western blot detection capabilities in just minutes.

Expanded Antibody GMP Production Capacity
Cobra Biologics has expandied production capacities in their three specialized GMP manufacturing sites to meet increasing customer demands. As a continuation of their infrastructure investment plan, Cobra has recently installed a state-of-the-art Thermo Fisher 1000 L HyClone Single-Use Bioreactor (SUB) in their centre of excellence for mammalian antibody and recombinant protein production. The centre is located in Södertälje, near Stockholm, Sweden. Cobra Biologics has achieved a ten-fold increase in antibody business over the course of the last two years and has responded with a commitment to single-use,
disposable technologies. By adding the 1000 L SUB to their existing 50 L and 250 L Finesse bioreactor control platform, customers have a highly capable, scalable, and robust DeltaV-based cGMP bioprocessing solution.

Advanced Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometers
JASCO has announced the new FT/IR-4000/6000 series which offers very high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios, superior sensitivity, and vibration-free scanning. These new JASCO instruments are helping to redefine the powerful and easy-to-use FTIR technique with their enhanced capabilities. The compact FT/IR-4000/6000 instruments feature a highly stable, corner-cube interferometer and AccuTrac™ DSP technology, enabling rapid and accurate tracking of mirror position and velocity for optimum S/N performance.
New model specifications are as follows:
  • FT/IR-4600 - max resolution: 0.7 cm-1; S/N ratio: 25,000:1
  • FT/IR-4700 - max resolution: 0.4 cm-1; S/N ratio: 35,000:1
  • FT/IR-6600 - max resolution: 0.4 cm-1; S/N ratio: 45,000:1
  • FT/IR-6700 - max resolution: 0.25 cm-1; S/N ratio: 47,000:1
  • FT/IR-6800 - max resolution: 0.07 cm-1; S/N ratio: 55,000:1
